The name is from Ada Lovelace, an assistant to Charles Babbage, who is credited with being the first programmer. ADAM Advanced Design Automation System U.S. Army project revolving around developing a complete end-to-end design automation system. ADAS Architectural Design and Assessment System Originally a Navy developed tool (ICOS/ECOS) which was picked up by the Army and transformed to the current product. The engineering work is performed by Research Triangle Institute and the tool now marketed by CADRE Technologies. AFIT Air Force Institute of Technology Based near Dayton, OH, the Air Force advanced degree university. AMSDS Automated Microcode computer Synthesis and Design System A VHSIC funded project to demonstrate more automated means of generating complex hardware from software specifications. ATA Advanced Tactical Aircraft Recently renamed A-12, the name for the Navy full scale development project of the next generation aircraft. ATF Advanced Tactical Fighter The Air Forces' Development project for the next generation fighter aircraft. Currently in demonstration / validation phase with two competing contractors. ATH Advanced Tactical Helicopter Renamed to LHX, the Army's demonstration / validation phase next generation helicopter. AYK-14 Navy Embedded Standard Airborne Computer Currently a VHSIC Technology Insertion program at CDC and Unisys. In full form, termed AN/AYK-14. BIU Bus-Interface Unit A general term for the functional component that implements a particular bus protocol; especially distributed control busses. Most commonly used in relation to PI, TM, and ETM bus implementations. CALS Computer-Aided Acquisition and Logistic Support A program office within the OUSDAs' DLA which is overseeing the development of electronic methods of managing the research, production, acquisition, and maintenance of military goods. CET Computer and Electronics Technology A division of OUSDRE which oversees the electronic and technology basic research contracts. Some of the program offices within this organization are VHSIC and Ada. Copperhead ? CSP Common Signal Processor A 1.0 micron VHSIC System Insertion Project at IBM under Air Force guidance. (1987-1988). DARPA Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency A basic research funding organization of the Department of Defense (DoD). Funds most of the DoD's university and other basic study contracts. DESC Defense Electronics Supply Center The main acceptance and warehousing center for electronic components within the OUSDA. DID Data Item Description A detailed description of deliverables (to the government) under a specific contract; referenced in Contract Deliverables Form 1423. For example, the Air Force has Program Management Directives in the actual contract which references the appropriate DIDs. DIU Data Interface Unit Part of the overall VHSIC interoperability generated standards. See BIU. DLA Defense Logistics Agency An agency under the Office of the Undersecretary for Defense Acquisition (OUSDA) Production and Logistics (P&L). DoD Department of Defense One of many departments in the President of the United States of America's (USA) cabinet. An organization of the Federal government which is administered by the President. DRE Defense Research and Engineering An agency of the OUSDA which oversees basic and applied research contracts for the Department of Defense (DoD). Main branches are the Research and Advanced Technology and Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). EIS Engineering Information System A sub-program within the VHSIC program office which is studying how to develop a complete CAE/CAD system for the research, prototype, and development of electronic systems for the DoD. EMSP Enhanced Modular Signal Processor A VHSIC Technology Insertion contract at AT&T and Honeywell. ETM-Bus Element Test and Maintenance Bus Synchronous, serial bus specification for on-chip self test (BIST). Used as a starting basis for the IEEE JTAG working group to compose draft standard 1149.1. Developed as part of the VHSIC program Interoperability standards work. FLIR Forward Looking Infrared GVSC Generic VHSIC Spaceborne Computer HITS Hierarchical Integrated Test System A U.S. Navy (NAEC) standard tester independent test language and simulation system. IDAS Integrated Design Automation System A sub-program within the VHSIC program office which developed design aid / automation tools around VHDL for the VHSIC program. JIAWG Joint Integrated Avionics Working Group A group of development contractors and DoD research organizations which is setting standards for common interfaces of electronic modules for use on the new aircraft development programs (ATF, ATA/A12, and ATH/LHX). The group has incorporated the VHSIC Interoperability standards (PI-Bus, TM- Bus, ETM-Bus) into their common avionics package standard. The backplane consists of a 16 bit PI- Bus controller, dual TM-Bus, MIL-STD-1553B serial bus, and a high speed data bus. JTIDS Joint Tactical Information Distribution System U.S. Air Force program LABCOM Laboratory ? The main research and engineering laboratory under the DoD Army service. LHX Light Helicopter Experimental The Armys' development project for the next generation attack helicopter. Currently in demonstration/validation phase with two competing developers. MIL-HDBK-59 CALS Program Implementation Guide The document detailing the requirements of MIL- STD-1840B which call for electronic documentation during the acquisition and logistics phases of new military electronic systems. MIL-STD Military Standard The standards the military uses to guide the development and acquisition of all contracts and equipment they acquire. MIL-STD-454L Military Standard 454 for Microelectronic Devices A military standard for integrated circuit and other hybrid devices. Starting with version L in October 1988, includes the VHSIC Interoperability Standards and references VHDL and TISSS for Digital ASICs. MP Multi-Processor A Navy program to build a massively parallel (>64) processor for use in ? OUSDRE Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering The main farming ground for defense spending on research and new development. PDES Product Data Exchange Specification CALS' object oriented interactive database and format to support the DoD acquisition and logistics problem. Developed by a voluntary group of members from the DoD and Defense industry community. PDES, Inc. A non-profit corporation funded by the DoD CALS office which is prototyping and productizing the PDES definition. Located at and managed by the South Carolina Research Authority (SCRA). PI-Bus Parallel Interface Bus Backbone, parallel interconnection bus for VHSIC based subsystem boards. Chosen for implementation by the JIAWG and CSP committees. TDL TISSS Description Language TIF TISSS Input Format TISSS Tester Independent Support Software System A contract out of the VHSIC program office which is studying and developing a software system which will allow for the development of engineering and manufacturing test and tester information from software models of electronic modules to be tested. The idea is to have a system for developing the information while the unit is still being designed, and then translate the information to the specific format necessary to stimulate an actual tester with the manufactured electronic system. TM-Bus Test and Maintenance Bus Incorporated into the IEEE Test Technology Committee draft standard 1149.x. A four pin/line bus to serially connect all testable devices on a board. Developed as part of the VHSIC Interoperability standards and adopted also by JIAWG. TVL TISSS Vector Language TWL Test Waveform Language IEEE CS DATC Working Group on Test and IEEE SCC-20 ATPG Test Subcommittee draft standard. Recently renamed WAVES. VHDL VHSIC Hardware Description Language A sub-program of the VHSIC program office which developed a standard language for the expression of design information for digital electronics. Specifically meant to provide a standard language for which VHSIC contractors could interchange engineering design information on complex integrated circuits to incorporate them quicker. Under DoD funding, the military developed version 7.2 evolved into an IEEE standard in 1987 and is now termed IEEE Standard 1076-1987. VHSIC Very High Speed Integrated Circuits A program office from 1980 through 1989 within the C&ET which funded the development of advanced Integrated Circuits and technology for insertion into existing and future military equipment. VIS VHSIC Interoperability Standards A set of documents developed in conjunction with the VHSIC program. These include the PI-bus, TM- bus, ETM-bus and VHSIC Electrical Specifications. The standards define common ways that integrated circuit components and boards can all interface in a reliable, testable, and standard way. VPO VHSIC Program Office WAVES Waveform and Vector Exchange Specification Ad Hoc working group of the IEEE CS DATCs' DASS. Formed to develop a new Test Waveform Language (TWL) specification given the TISSS TVL specification as a starting point.
